*Update*

Today Brandon, My roomate, and myself met up at BL to hike the trails. Brandon brought a garmin 705 to record the trial, which worked very well. It is not his garmin, and I can't afford one of these things (although I really want one) so we neither of us were familiar with it.

We marked a way point on the screen, and you could see all of the trail we just walked, now how does he pull that off the garmin and send it to Jon? He has the usb cable, is there a cd?

Some guidence here would be very much aprreciated.

Go to myGarmin.com. It's kinda hard to figure out, but once you do.......

This link http://connect.garmin.com/signin should get you to the setup.

And BTW Bond lake would have been a trail out here at the mere mention of it. No red tape out west. We ride where we want!

You need the CD to load the program that allows the garmin connect web page to the uploading. You need to make an account at garmin connect, too.

Actually you don't need a CD to do this, just a USB cord to a computer. You can download the tranfer program from connect.garmin. At least that's how I updated my stuff.

For example, here's the track from my exploring the new planned mesa trails in E-ville using my 605 I got for Christmas (cheaper than 705; I don't need the heartrate and cadence stuff).

Waiting to hear back from Brandon today, unfortunately the lap/reset button didn't do it =/ so hopefully he can get it to work, otherwise... going to have to do is again with Scott B, or Ben B, or anyone and hike the trails, which will be much easier now that we have a 'beaten path'. I've been wanting a gps, I think scottot is right, the 305 is about advanced as anyone really needs to be the 705 is cool but who needs cadence and such... So where can I get one? anywhere around here sell them?

They have a new model which is just for HR, speed and nothing fancy.

Or the 305 bundle like everyone has:

Or I may get the 500 and I could sell you my 305? I like that idea.
Email me and let me know.

Once you plug it into a computer with the USB cable it will automatically create a new file containing all the data since the last time it was plugged in. Hopefully you plugged it in before doing the hike and/or reset history so your file will only contain BL data. Once the new file is cut (it will take a minute and show a progress meter) it will pop up a windows explorer window and you can browse to the file. It'll be under g:\Garmin\History where g: is the drive letter that windows assigned the 705 and have a file name based on the date of the data. This file should be suitable to hand off to whoever as it is parseable by any number of websites or programs.

Cool, thankyou ben, heres an interesting thought though, does it matter what computer you plug it into?

Brandon borrowed one from a friend, so does it affect the sstem to be using a different computer?

I would imagine that the GPS would be seen as an external drive by the computer if you can locate and pull the file off it the way your instructions describe... but I don't have one so I can't really play with it.

It doesn't matter what computer it gets plugged into, no. In my case I plug it into my laptop and it doesn't even have to be on. Just the act of being connected via USB cable prompts it to cut a new file with any new data it has. The files stay on the device forever as long as someone doesn't go and delete them. I have files from 2008 on mine still (as in, since I got it.)

Is it really just over a mile? If you build it, we will ride it!

Phase 1 is 1 mile... There was originally 3 phases, the only one marked was the first phase. So the total after all 3 phases there will be between 4 and 5 miles of singletrack, flip the map to the road view and anything green north of the road is fair game, I'll resurface a link that I made a long time ago.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&ll=43.181648,-78.908272&spn=0.015803,0.0421&t=h&z=15&msid=101042206339369825148.00047350d5acbc31554e4

I was pretty close as far as guestimating the trails, but the yellow phase 2 loop can clearly incorporate much much more! Once phase 1 gets started approving more trails will be as simple as a letter to the county and planning a trail day.

Very good question though, because it is important to understand that despite this first trail being short, there are plans to expand a lot on it.

The big difference between my drawing and the GPS i that the markers dissappeared in the bottom of the open area so we had to do a little executive decisioning, and there is thick brush there so we decided to go around it and meet up where I knew the next marker was.
